Moments to Exchange

In this animation workshop, you will be introduced to the basics of animation. During this week, you will learn how to develop your own animated film sequence without sound/audio. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those already experienced.   

We will begin preparatory work in weeks before the online workshop in September 2020. The preparatory work will include each participant to begin their visual diary. Any medium of choice may be used for the visual diary, for example, drawing, painting, collage, images, or writing. You are encouraged to begin making daily entries in your diary in order to generate a sequence of your experiences or elements of your day you find interesting.  

Out of the many entries you capture in your diary, one situation may be selected as a basis and starting point for your animation sequence. The remaining diary entries will be used to produce other visual elements.  

For the animation, you will be introduced to the stop motion animation technique, in which you will be able to download the STOP MOTION STUDIO app for free. You will be taught how to setup your own animation studio on campus or at home. This will begin with exercises on movement and speed of elements/objects. From this you will be able to begin working on your own animated sequence.  

We encourage you to experiment with the various analog stop-motion techniques. Some examples of animated films have been provided from Ulrike Isenberg's animation film archive, available on Teams for viewing.   

The focus of these workshop and examples of work is to give you a sense and feel of animation through exploring this great technique. The workshops will be interactive, so you are welcome to ask questions and experiment with technique.   

As you continue working on your animation, on Friday morning there will be a webinar hosted by Jeanne. The webinar will speak to analog artwork and digital output as an addition to the workshop on the digital intervention and urban space.   

Taking from the theme of the project involving, ‘the interrelation and interplay between analog and digital’, the participants will use the physical visual diary they have generated over few weeks. In addition to the animation, the artwork from the visual diary will be translated to digital content that can be further developed as promotional materials, which could be a personal campaign that each participant can blog about or use to promote themselves using print or digital media.   

The workshop duration will be between 2 to 3 hours, which includes a webinar and practical engagement through exercises.
